Wix, Squarespace, or a person who does it for you
Both work. Which one is right depends on how you feel about a Tuesday night spent learning an editor.
Wix or Squarespace is right when
- You enjoy making things and want your hands on every page.
- You'd rather spend a few evenings once than pay someone monthly.
- Your site rarely changes.
- You want to sell products online with checkout built in. Shopify is made for that.
They also cost less. A builder plan on a yearly term is less than a hundred dollars a month and often less than thirty. You can edit any page whenever you like, with nobody to ask.
A person is right when
- You've started the site twice and stopped both times.
- Your prices, hours or menu change often enough that "I'll get to it" costs you customers.
- You'd rather text someone a sentence than learn where the Edit button is.
- You want the people who look you up to see something that looks like you, not a template with your logo.
Nobody is wrong about this. The first group has more time than money. The second has the reverse.
What goes wrong with each
A builder you stop opening. The site goes stale. The price on it is last year's, the hours are the summer ones, and the sign-in is on an email you've forgotten. Your website still shows last year's prices covers the way out.
A person you can't reach. If they leave, you can be locked out of your own site. Make sure the domain is in your name and not theirs. Do I own my website? shows the check.
How to choose
Ask yourself one question. When the price changes next month, what happens?
If the answer is "I change it that night", a builder suits you. If it's "I mean to, and then I don't", you want a person.
If you land on the second one, text me. The first rebuild is free, so you see what you'd get before you choose.
